Each round, players place a card face down on the table, proclaiming the rank of each card one by one as they go (for this game, the suit of the card is not important). If any of the other players have reason to believe that the person laying down cards is lying about what they’re putting down, they can cry bullshit at this point in the round. If no one calls bullshit, the player is free to keep their cards on the pile, which continues to increase until it is inherited by someone. Each following player must play a card that has a greater rank than the card that was placed down before him or herself (or pretend they have one).
If the cards are exactly what the player stated they were and someone called bullshit, the person who called the bluff is the one who ends up with the centre pile of cards in his or her possession.
Each player announces their bluffs as the game progresses, and the winner is the one who has lost all of his or her cards.
Rule Variations of Bullshit
While the basic rules for a game of bullshit are described in the preceding section, there are numerous different variations of the game that are played around the world that either add or remove rules in order to increase the game’s complexity. For example, in the United Kingdom, the game of bullshit is known as bullshit. Here are some examples of bullshit versions that have been played:
- In the event that a player would prefer not to lie or if all cards of a required rank have already been played out throughout the course of the game, he or she may choose to skip their turn. As opposed to merely the rank above, players can place a card of the rank either above or below the card that was previously played
- This is in addition to the rank above. It is permissible for players to set multiples of a card rank down in the same hand (for example, two kings)
- Cheaters must be called if they are detected, same as if a player lied during a bluff. Players may smuggle extra cards with the card they place down, and discovered cheaters must be called appropriately. In accordance with Bolivian regulations, players must continue to put cards of the same rank until a cheat is called or all players pass.

National Variations of Bullshit
A casual card game known as bullshit, cheat, or bluff, has been around for hundreds of years and is now played all over the world as a kind of gambling. As a result, many foreign groups have developed their own variants of the game, which are then played in their own communities. Here are a few examples of the many distinct varieties of bullshit that can be found all around the world:
- Moogein (also known as Schwindein, Lügen, or Zweifein) is a German and Austrian version of bullshit that involves going through the suits of cards and the ranks of cards. In this variant, each suit of cards is called from Ace through King in increasing rank until a cheat is called
- sVerish’ Ne Verish(translated into English as “trust, no trust”) is a variation on bullshit that contains a few fundamental rule alterations. InVerish’ Ne Verish,if players end up needing to pick up the stack of cards, they are able to discard any four cards of the same rank. Skipping or passing is permitted, and if all players pass, the current stack is placed off to the side, and a new stack is begun
- 吹牛(chuī niú,“bragging”) is a version of bullshit that is played in provincial China. The difference between this version of bullshit and the traditional card game is that there are no restrictions on the rank of card you put down in any given turn. This allows the player to conceivably go the full game without lying
- Fourshit: In this English version of bullshit, each player places cards of the same rank until there is a call, and the pile is picked up, after which the person to the player’s left picks up the game at any rank they wish. If at any time a player collects all four cards of a rank, they are then removed from play
Strategies for Playing Bullshit
It is possible to employ a number of methods while playing bullshit that will increase the likelihood that you will be successful during the duration of the hand. Here are a few pointers that can help you be more successful when playing the game of bullshit:
Don’t Lie Unless You Have to
In the game, if you have a set of cards of a given rank and choose to withhold them in order to lay different cards down, you are setting yourself up for difficulty later on. Calling true improves the amount of times other players call your bluff wrongly and also lessens the likelihood of you being detected when you’re forced to lie later in the game, both of which are beneficial.
Carefully Arrange Your Cards
Organize your cards so that they correspond to the sections of the suit that you will be required to play in any given round. As an example, if you’re playing with four players, you should add up the ranks of every fourth card from Ace to King in order to determine which ranks you’ll be accountable for coming up with. Choose Higher Cards When Lying

This game is commonly referred as asCheatin Britain and Bullshitin the United States. It occurs as I Doubt It in a number of works. Getting rid of all of your cards by playing them to a discard pile is the goal of the game. Due to the fact that cards are dealt face down, players have the option of lying about the cards they are holding, but if their deception is discovered, they must pick up the entire pile. In this game, each player takes on the role of the player who is one rank higher than the preceding player.
That particular version of I Doubt It is discussed in greater detail on a different page.
Players and Cards
The game may be played by a group of two to ten people. A regular 52-card deck is used in this game.
Players are handed all of the cards; some may have more cards than others, but not by a significant amount. The goal is to get rid of all of your playing cards. Choose at random who should go first, and then proceed in a clockwise fashion. There is a discard pile on the table, which begins out completely empty. A turn comprises of discarding one or more cards from the pile, face down, and shouting out their respective ranks. The first player must discard his or her Aces, the second player must discard his or her Twos, the third player must discard his or her Threes, and so on.
Due to the fact that the cards are discarded face down, you are not required to play the rank that you are calling.
The play can be challenged by any other player who believes that the card(s) tossed by a player do not match the rank called by yelling “Cheat!”, “Bullshit!”, or “I doubt it!” (depending on what you call the game).

As soon as the challenge is settled, play resumes in the usual rotation: The player to his or her left of the one who was challenged plays and shouts out the next rank in the sequence. The winner of the game is the first player to get rid of all of their cards and survive any challenges that may arise as a result of their last move. Suppose you play your final remaining card(s), but someone challenges you, and the cards you played are not what you predicted, you pick up the pile and the game continues from there.
If there are a large number of participants, you may want to utilize two or more packs that have been jumbled together. For some persons, the sequence of ranks that must be played runs downward rather than upward, starting with A, K, Q, J, 10, and continuing until the end of the game. Some players play in such a way that you can (claim to be able to) play either the next rank above or the next rank below the rank that was previously stated by the prior player. For example, if the player before you played some cards and stated “two tens,” and you do not want to challenge him, you have the option of playing jacks or nines as your next cards.
- However, there is no restriction on the rank of cards that may be played in the Chinese game known as (chu ni= boasting) or (shu huăng= lying), which is popular in Fujian province.

Button Game by DollTV is a set of playing cards and a red button that is available for purchase on the website. Using the button that says “bullshit” in a variety of celebrity impersonation voices, players may put themselves in a position of difficulty. It has the regular 52 cards, plus two wild jokers and two ‘bureaucrat’ cards, in addition to the standard 52 cards. There are a maximum of four cards allowed to be played at a time, and the holder of a bureaucrat may play it immediately after a challenge in order to cancel that challenge and select the rank of cards that will be used to play the following challenge.

The Game Theory of ‘Bullshit’
Bullshit (also known as ‘Cheat’ or ‘BS’) is a card game in which players can gain an advantage by lying about their cards. Calling someone’s bluff is a hazardous move since if you’re wrong, you’ll be penalized. Player’s are not rewarded for calling bullshit on someone else because doing so puts them at danger of losing their own lives. I was interested in learning more about the game theory behind ‘Bullshit,’ so I created a simple program to imitate the game. For this project, I wrote numerous distinct tactics and tested them against each other thousands of times in order to determine the victory rate of each one.

- I chose the name ‘Bullshit’ for this experiment since the rules were straightforward and straightforward to code.
- Bullshit is a card game that is played using a normal 52-card deck of cards.

- Any number of cards face down in a stack is placed on the table by Player 1, who declares that they are all aces. - First, I created a script that would allow me to play out the game using specific techniques. In the game, each player has two complimentary strategies recorded in their memory: a ‘bluffing’ strategy that controls how they play, and a ‘calling’ strategy that decides when they call bullshit on other players. To determine how often a strategy won, I tested it against three other players using random strategies5,000 times
- I then deleted the bad tactics and repeated the experiment to ensure that inferior strategies did not distort my results.

Remember that if a method does not do well, it will be eliminated from consideration and the test will be repeated. The Saint —unless compelled to do so—never lies. For example, if they are required to play an ace but do not have any aces, they will be compelled to tell a lie. The Dabbler —lie 10 percent of the time, according to the data.

Whenever the number of cards played plus the number of the same card that the collector possesses in his or her own hand equals four, the Collector calls out the players involved.
The Salty Accountant —plays in the same way as the accountant, but calls on the leader considerably more frequently than the other players.
First and foremost, if the present player has exhausted all of his or her cards, you should always call bullshit on them.
For the second time, whenever you lie with a card, you should always lie with your ‘worst card.’ Your ‘worst card’ is the card that you will not be able to play for the longest period of time since you will have lied about it.
This approach wins 63 percent of the time when utilized against three other players who choose a random card instead of using this technique.
After more than 120,000 simulated games, I was able to obtain some preliminary findings. You lose more money while bluffing since the more you lie, the more money you give up.
- Because there are four players, the Saint (do not lie) was victorious in 51 percent of games (remember that the predicted value is 25 percent). Even Mr. Pathological (who lied 50 percent of the time) only won 2 percent of the games he played. In a surprising turn of events, the Closer (who did not lie if they could complete the task without lying) fared poorly (9 percent)
- The Comeback Closer, on the other hand, fared significantly better (43 percent), despite lying when he was losing. Another person who didn’t perform as well as I thought was the Game Theorist (who lied if nonsense wasn’t called frequently)
- He received 28 percent of the vote.
If you’re trying to decide when to call someone out, less is more.
- 42 percent of games were won by players who never used the term “bullshit.” Those that called their cards 50 percent of the time only won 10 percent of the time. I was really aback by the fact that the Accountant (who keeps track of how much each player lies) didn’t fare particularly well. This is most likely due to the fact that you don’t have too many opportunities in a single game to determine whether or not someone is lying, and acquiring this knowledge is expensive
- They also fared well with the Salty One, who only ever called on the leader in their games, winning 38 percent of their games.
You may view all of the results by clicking here. The best four bluffing and four calling methods remained after a number of rounds of eliminating the worst-performing ones. The Saint and the Comeback Closer were the two most effective bluffing methods.
- When it came to the believer (who never says nonsense), the Saint was clearly superior
- Yet, it performed poorly against him (winning just 15 percent of the time). The Believer (who never called BS) turned out to be the most successful calling technique (winning 39 percent of games).
The complete results of rounds 2 and 3 may be seen here. This prompted me to try to figure out the optimal bluffing/calling combinations to utilize in my poker games. I attempted a few different combinations depending on the results of my prior runs and discovered the following tactics to be the most effective:
- Comeback Closer + The Believer (only lies after losing and never calls)
- Comeback Closer + The Believer The Saint plus the Believer (never lie and never call)
- The Saint plus the Believer. Comeback Closer + The Salty One (always lie when you’re losing and only call on the leader)
- Comeback Closer + The Salty One
When compared to one another, these three tactics performed admirably in general, but each had distinct advantages and disadvantages. As a result, I developed a’metagame’ to identify the most effective methods. The best description I could find for the metagame was provided by Urban Dictionary, which I found surprising: In many complicated games, the term “metagame” refers to any part of strategy that requires thinking about what your opponent is thinking about you while you are thinking about him or her.
If, on the other hand, everyone against whom you are playing employs this approach, the optimal plan is to constantly lie and never call bullshit.
A combination of the Comeback Closer and the Salty One is the most effective way to defeat this tactic (who calls bullshit every so often on the leader).
When playing numerous games with the same group of individuals, the metagame becomes even more crucial.
Of course, you should only participate in the metagame if your opponents are doing it as well!
This combo wins 69 percent of games when compared to the random techniques listed above!
People despise being deceived.
This tendency to despise liars is an excellent one to have outside of basic card games.
Nonetheless, because no one is encouraged to prevent other individuals from lying, this technique permits others to lie without fear of being exposed to consequences, creating a tragedy of the commons.
The heroes who are willing to stand up to the liars in the game Bullshit, however, are frequently the ones who lose the game.
