It was discovered as a result of two related articles that were published today (May 16th) in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry.

The current research expands on previous findings and also finds that persons who routinely finish number puzzles have the same effect as those who do not.

They discovered that the greater the frequency with which individuals interacted with the puzzles, the higher their performance on tests testing attention, reasoning, and memory were.

Dr Anne Corbett, of the University of Exeter Medical School, who was the principal investigator for the study, stated: “In our research, we discovered that the more frequently people engage with puzzles such as crosswords and Sudoku, the sharper their performance is across a range of tasks that assess memory and attention, as well as reasoning.

  4. Additionally, participants in the PROTECT study will have access to a brain training program that has been shown to improve brain function in the past.
  5. Clive Ballard, Professor of Age-Related Diseases at the University of Exeter Medical School, made the following statement: “This decade’s most exciting research initiatives, PROTECT, is proving to be one of the most fruitful.

Mind games: a mental workout to help keep your brain sharp

A single mother of three teens, Sharon, 46, came to see me about her increased forgetfulness. She is a single mother of three children. Working full-time and taking care of her family was becoming too much for her, and she was losing track of lunchboxes, forgetting appointments, and having difficulty concentrating. Sharon was concerned since her grandmother, who died at the age of 79, had Alzheimer’s disease, and she feared she may be developing the condition too — albeit at a much younger age.

  1. Anytime someone comes to me with concerns about middle-aged pauses, I do a physical examination to rule out any underlying medical issues or pharmaceutical side effects that might be harming the health of their brain.
  2. I also take a look at their daily routines to see if there are any areas where they can make improvements to improve their overall brain health.
  3. Before commencing the training, her baseline memory scores were approximately typical for her age, and MRI scans during memory tests indicated substantial neural activity – her brain was working hard to recall things.
  4. After two weeks, her memory tests revealed considerable gains, and a subsequent MRI revealed little neuronal activity during word recall, indicating that her brain had grown more efficient.
  5. Sharon’s healthy diet and exercise habits assisted her in losing a few unnecessary pounds, and she gained confidence in her appearance – both at home and at work.
  6. Sharon’s experience was similar to that of many other people who have participated in our healthy living programs and research methods throughout the years.
  7. It was discovered that there was less activity in the frontal lobe of the brain, which may be due to higher cognitive efficiency of a brain area engaged in working memory, which is a type of short-term memory related with current cognitive processing and problem solving.
  8. However, the struggle becomes much simpler when individuals grasp the relationship between everyday behaviour and brain health, establish objectives that are acceptable and receive feedback that encourages them.
  9. Memory scores improved in direct proportion to the amount of good lifestyle behaviors that participants practiced (e.g., physical activity, healthy food, and not smoking).

These findings are consistent with prior research that has demonstrated the synergistic advantages of combining healthy behaviors in order to reduce the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

My co-author, Gigi Vorgan, and I describe the scientific evidence that lifestyle habits matter when it comes to brain health in our book, 2 Weeks to a Younger Brain. We also provide readers with 14 days of strategies and exercises to get them started on a brain-healthy lifestyle that they can maintain for the rest of their lives. Test your own memory by analyzing it at the start of the process and then again after you have learned some of the skills. The following is a list of eight terms that are not linked to each other.

Mental exercises aren’t just for mathematicians or professional chess players: they’re for creative types, too.

I say this as someone who, due to the fact that mental exercises require time, frequently neglects them. Why would I waste valuable minutes of my day on something that has absolutely nothing to do with my time-consuming projects? However, numerous scientific studies have shown that mental exercises can improve your mood, memory, and overall brain functionality (especially as you age). This should come as no surprise when you consider that brain power is similar to a muscle: you either use it or lose it.

not by fiddling around with mind games or crossword puzzles.

As for why that is, I’ll leave it to the scientists to explain, but I can share with you a few mental exercises I’ve lately discovered that have sharpened my brain and helped it break free from the mind-numbing world of screens:

1. Crossword Puzzles

For authors, this one should come as no surprise. Given that we live in the realm of words, this is, after all, supposed to be our specialty, right? It’s only when I don’t know the references in the clues that I have no idea what they’re truly hinting to. This is an issue I regularly run into. This just serves to make me feel like a neanderthal because so many of my crossword puzzles have blank spots at the conclusion.:/ Nonetheless, it causes me to consider things critically and attempt to draw connections between them (a skill every writer needs).

2. Jigsaw Puzzles

This is the more visually appealing cousin of crossword puzzles, and I’ll be honest: I’m more of a word geek than an art nerd when it comes to puzzles. Visualization is something I struggle with. I’m good at creating situations with words, but I struggle when it comes to literally putting together the components of a photograph. I’m not very gifted at producing charts or graphics to express my ideas, and as a result, I have difficulty putting visual fragments together to form a cohesive whole (I can organize ideas all day long, just not images).

Also, there is nothing that can compare to the satisfaction of putting the final piece of a puzzle together and seeing it come together.

3. Untying Knots

That’s right, you read that correctly. I’m not sure whether it has any specific benefits that have been established, but it does need dedication and a lot of patience. Make no mistake about it: untying knots in your hair or in the chains of your necklaces is one thing. That is really distressing. However, every time I find my crochet yarn skein twisted up in itself, I know I’m in for at least a few minutes of extra labor on the project. Providing I am not in a hurry, this can be a semi-pleasant exercise in patience and persistence.

The process of untangling and witnessing the knots and tangles break apart is very relaxing, as the jumble gradually becomes one smooth, clean thread as you work your way through the knots.

4. Learning something new

It might be learning a new language, learning a new instrument, learning a new song, or even just learning a new vocabulary term. However, even the simplest act of learning sends new information to our brain and broadens our area of knowledge—or reveals an unanticipated relationship between things that are already familiar to us—while some of these actions are more intense than others. The process is analogous to adding fresh ingredients to the creative cauldrons in our heads. It enhances the taste of our mental activity and allows us to break away from any ruts that we may have previously established in our thinking.

Sometimes all we need to do is take a fresh look at our work in order to figure out how to address the problem.

This is why it is beneficial to train our thoughts so that they remain sharp and flexible, capable of pivoting, analyzing, and synthesizing as needed during our creative process.

What do you do to keep your mind sharp? Do you participate in any of these activities on a regular basis? (Either as a mental workout or simply for amusement purposes.)
