Ring the Bull: The Original Hook and Ring Game
To play Ring the Bull, you need a hook and a ring. It is a traditional game that can be found in sports bars, ski lodges, and quaint drinking spots all around the world. In addition, it has a very lengthy history in the British pub scene. In reality, according to mythology, it was the English Crusaders who brought the game back from Jerusalem in the 12th century. In the unlikely event that you happen to be playing Ring the Bull at Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, the oldest inn in England (established in 1189 AD), you may be seeing the genuine beginnings of this game.

Any excellent bar game will have this as its defining characteristic. A rope is usually used to attach the metal ring, which is then suspended from a ceiling rafter or other suitable structure. To play the game, the player must first swing the ring around and try to land it on the hook.
In the original game, which dates back decades, you would aim the ring towards the horn of a bull’s head that was placed on the wall.

You would aim the ring towards the horn of a bull’s head that was hung on the wall in the original game, which dates back to the 1950s. Most of the time, though, it’s merely a hook that’s screwed into the picture of a bull nowadays. Alternatively, the snout of a fictitious bull’s head might be employed. A board, on the other hand, is used by the vast majority of people. In order to play a simple game of ring toss, follow the steps provided below (note: if you already have a ring toss board, likeone of these, follow those instructions.)
Let’s have a look at how to play a game of ring toss now.
Rules for your own game of Ring the Bull
There are no general rules for this game, which is a good thing. Everyone’s favorite pub or bar has a unique set-up, and unless there are certain house rules to follow, you can design your own game and scoring structure.
Ring Toss: Getting Started
First, choose if the ring should be thrown from a conventional distance or from a longer distance. It is possible that certain bars will have this measured for you. Keep in mind that the hook is typically set around 5 feet above the ground, although it may be higher or lower depending on the available floor space. The distance between the hook and the thrower is normally between 6 and 8 feet. The problem is figuring out how high you should raise the rope to release it from. That is, where you should hold the rope in order to achieve the correct arc and ensure that the ring rests properly on the hook as you are tying the knot.
Sometimes it’s preferable to take a direct shot at the target.
The way you play and score in a ring toss game is completely up to you, and there is no right or wrong way.
Hook and Ring Game Variations
Consider the following scenario: each participant is given five throws every round. Each round, try to land as many rings as you can. Calculate the final score at the conclusion of 5 rounds (or more).
Play to 21
The winner is the first person to connect 21 rings. Always remember that you may need to make adjustments to this amount. In certain establishments, simply getting one ring might take a long time. However, after you learn the intricacies of the toss, you will be able to maintain some consistency. It’s merely a matter of spending more time at that particular establishment! You may also simply toss 21 rings and see who manages to hook the most of them.
Play Horse (or Bull!)
BULL is a game that may be played if you have adequate area. Pick a location and shoot a shot, much like you would in basketball’s “horse” (i.e. from the side of the room). Alternatively, you may try to hook the ring with the opposite hand. If you get it on the hook, your opponent is required to make the same shot as you did. If he doesn’t make it, he receives a B. The one who spells out BULL first loses.
The Island Version of Hook and Ring: Bimini Ring (aka Tiki Toss)!
Tiki Toss is a toy that is offered on Amazon (affiliate link) In the Caribbean, if you’re lucky enough to be able to play favorite bar games, keep an eye out for the island version of ring toss, known as the Bimini Ring. As previously stated, there are a number of different legends surrounding the history of this game. However, some in the know say that Ernest Hemmingway was the one who began it after a night of tuna fishing off the coast of Bimini. In its most simple form, the bimini ring is a variation on the ring toss that may be played almost anyplace.
And the ring is hurled 3 – 4 feet away from the hook to complete the circle.
For example, if the hook is attached to a post, you can swing the ring from behind the post and attempt to land it on the way back.
Ringing the Bull is a simple and affordable DIY project that can be done in any bar.
The game offers lots of opportunities to include some of your bar’s own flavor, whether it’s through rule modifications, how and where the ring and hook are installed, or how the game is played in your business. If you enjoy games like these, you might be interested in these traditional pub games.

Ringing the bull – Wikipedia
A bullis a pub game is on the horizon. Swinging a bull’snose-ring, which is tied to a string, in an arc such that it hooks onto a bull’s nose and hook is the objective of this technique. It must remain on the hook in order to be considered a successful throw. There is a robust and ongoing history of playing this game at Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalemin Nottingham, which is claimed to be the oldest pub in England, as well as in numerous other classic public houses around the country.
The hook and ring game was adopted by the older settlers of the Caribbean islands, where it is also referred to as theBimini Ring Game. When the hook is tied to a post or pole, the ring can actually be swung behind the hook, snagging on the hook as it swings back to the starting position.
If the ring is captured by the hook, the player receives two points for the catch. It is worth three points for the throw if the ring is swung from behind the hook and then swings back and catches on the hook after it has been caught.

Ringing the Bull – History and information
Using a rope, players must attempt to swing a metal ring from the ceiling to a metal hook on the wall, which is located on the other side of the room. The hook was originally made from a bull’s horn. The hook is frequently buried in the snout of the head of a bull that is painted on the wall. Other animals, such as stags and pigs, have been used in the creation of these versions. The game is one of the oldest in the country, and it is said to have been brought back by Crusaders from Jerusalem, according to folklore.
- With its history stretching back to 1189, this bar undoubtedly has some historical significance, and the legend surely has some basis in fact.
- is depicted on the left-hand side of the page.
- Ringing the Bull, which can be located at Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem in Nottingham, can be found on the left center and left bottom.
- Also played in and around the Caribbean, where it is known by numerous names and has a nautical motif in which players must ring the bell of a fishing boat.
- Several ideas have been advanced as to its origin.
- Jerrold, 1838, that the first confirmed documented reference to the game was discovered.
- Take note of the two hooks on the horns, as well as one on the nose of the animal.
It is stated in the game description that the ring is to be thrown onto the hook, and the picture appears to support this claim because the string is not taut.
Because the game is so easy, many bars choose to present it as a casual pastime rather than as a competitive event to attract customers.
The most basic throw is a simple swing in a clockwise direction (for a right-handed player) straight onto the ring, but more advanced players can also ring the bull across themselves in an anti-clockwise direction to increase their chances of winning.
If they want to make it even more difficult, they may do it while standing near to the target rather than at the typical throwing mark.
Yes, it will be difficult, but it will not be impossible!

How to Play Hook and Ring Game
Despite the fact that the Hook and Ring Game has been around for a long time, it is known by many different names across the world. Some people refer to it as Bimini Ring, while others refer to it as Ring the Bull, and it can have a variety of rules variants depending on where you play. We are presenting you our advice on how to get started play the simple Hook and Ring game.
Hook and Ring Equipment
When it comes to playing, the only things you actually need are a hook, ring, and string, but we provide a great setup that includes a bottle opener as well as a magnetic bottle cap catch.
Hook and Ring Game Setup
Setup is straightforward; first, hang the game board on a wall with the hook approximately 4 feet above the ground, as shown in the illustration. After that, install the eye hook into the ceiling around 4-5′ away from the wall. Now take the ring and set it on the eye hook, allowing a small amount of slack in the string to knot the rope to the eye hook. You will need to make any necessary adjustments to the string in order to get the desired length. It is possible that you will need to move the eye hook closer to the game board if you find that the game is becoming too difficult or that your ceilings are too high.
How to score points in Hook and Ring
It’s simple to rack up points in Hook and Ring. Each time a player manages to get the ring to stick onto the hook, he or she receives one point. That is all there is to it. There are no points awarded if you are unable to secure the right onto the hook in time. Simply hitting the hook does not result in any points being rewarded. That’s just not the right way to play the game.
How many people can play Hook and Ring
There is no limit to the number of players who can participate in hook and ring. You can even play by yourself. Simply take turns swinging the hook a total of ten times before allowing the next person to try their luck. The winner is determined by who is the first to 11 or 21 points.
How do you win at Hook and Ring
We propose that you play to 21 points, but if you want to play a shorter game, you can play to 11 points. Take care to ensure that everyone receives an equal number of swings. For example, if player 1 goes first and scores 21 points, you must allow player 2 to go first and score the same number of points in order for player 2 to tie the game or gain the advantage.

Hook and Ring Toss Rules
The ring toss regulations differ based on where you obtain them and how you play the game, but the goal stays the same no matter where you get them or how you play it. A player’s score is determined by how many times they strike the ring and land it on the hook. The player with the most points wins the game. To swing the ring, each participant is given three opportunities. He or she can score on all three of his or her turns, following which it is the turn of the next player. After numerous rounds, the scores are totalled, and in the event of a tie, players take further turns in order to obtain the deciding point for their team.
- The ring once contacts the hook and produces a “ting” sound
- 1 point 2 points if the ring strikes the hook twice and produces a “ting” sound
- 5 points are awarded if the ring lands on the hook.
Hook and Ring Toss Strategy
Follow these steps to win the hook and ring game: Make sure that the O-ring is motionless (and not spinning) as you toss it towards the hook in order to improve the likelihood that it will land successfully. Additionally, swing the ring slightly to the left or right of the hook so that it produces a tiny arc and lands successfully rather than clanking against the hook.

How To Make A Ring And Hook Game
We first became aware of the Ring and Hook Game a few years ago, when our daughter and son-in-law happened to see it while on vacation with their friends. They came home and installed the game under their carport. Then our second daughter had one placed in her garage as well. A competition was necessary since our family has a competitive streak, which is to say that we needed one. It’s also a lot of fun to do on rainy days!
Supplies for making a Hook and Ring Toss Game
- Make a small scrap piece of wood and paint it in the colors of your choice. 1 Inch O Ring (1)
- 1 Inch O Ring (2)
- (1) 1 3/8′′ Screw Eye Hook for the ceiling
- 1 3 3/8″ Open HookScrew(1)
- s2″ Deck Screws(2)
- sNylon String
- sEasy-Tack Repositionable Adhesive Spray
Making the hook toss game
Instead of drilling a hole in the wall, we opted to mount our Open Hook on a piece of scrap wood, which allowed me to have a little fun with painting the wooden frame. So I decided to paint a bulls-eye on it and use the colors red, white, and blue from my favorite summer dcor to make it a little more interesting. My husband usually seems to have a couple pieces of scrap wood, which I appreciate, and he happened to have the exact piece for this project, so there was no need to cut anything. I started by painting the board with a coat of white paint and allowing it to cure over night.
Once the sides were dry, I taped the top corners to match the side edges and painted those the same color as the side edges as well.
He used Easy-Tack Repositionable Adhesive Spray to adhere the stencil to the wall and then painted the bulls-eye in Navy Blue with acrylic paint.
How to Install The Ring and Hook Game aka Ringing the Bull Game
It’s time to decide where you want your bulls-eye target to be mounted on the garage wall. For this, you will need to determine the most convenient spot in your garage, which for us is just next to the back entrance of the house. Once we had decided where we wanted our Ring and Hook Game Bulls-eye to go, we needed to identify a location where there was a stud in the wall to mount it. My husband brought out one of his toys, I mean gadgets, which is theZircon Stud Finder, which I had never seen before.
- Five feet above the ground was where we decided to place our bulls-eye target.
- To begin, drill a pilot hole into the wall at the desired place.
- Then, using two 2′′ deck screws, secure the bulls-eye board to the wall using the other end of the board.
- When deciding on your playing area, bear in mind that you will need to be around 5 or 6 feet away from the bulls-eye wall in order to participate.
- Make a mark on the bulls-eye target from the side wall across to the open ring hook that is really on the bulls-eye target.
- Now we need to take two measurements on the ceiling in order to determine the exact placement of the eye hook from which the string will be suspended.
- We decided on a distance of 6 feet.
Now is the time to double-check that our ceiling eye hook is exactly the same distance from the side wall as the bulls-eye target, something we should have done earlier.
As previously stated, we chose a distance of 71 inches as our starting point.
That ladder has been a godsend since it can be used in a variety of ways throughout the house and for a variety of purposes.
Before screwing the eye hook into the ceiling, tie the rope to the eye hook and secure it with a screwdriver.
The precise length of sting you require is determined via a process of trial and error based on the distance between your ceiling eye hook and the target open hook.
After that, proceed to tighten the string, leaving a little amount of slack.
In order to establish whether or not your string is too long, you will need to play the game by swinging the ring a few times.
You’d never guess it, would you?
Although it took me several attempts, I eventually got a ringer as well!

There have been many stories throughout the years about how the Bimini Ring Game got started. But, we will not bore you with some long drawn out explanation. Some say it was started in the Caribbean by pirates as early as 1715. Sounds cool, but don’t think so.Another claims it happened while on a sailboat traveling the globe with nothing else to do. That’s ridiculous.Another person claims that it all began using a bullhorn, not a hook somewhere in England. This sounds like bull to us.And, still another man in the Midwest told us it was started by his uncle. From what we understand he was swinging a rope with a tire tied on it catching it on a broken tree limb.
And this is the one we believe today.Pictured to the right is Ernest Hemingway with a prize tuna he caught off the coast of Bimini. That night was one of great celebration at the Bimini Big Game Club andis believed to be the night he made the first Bimini Ring Game.Bimini Enterprises, Inc.
