The Best Shogi Board Game Sets & Pieces

The Best Shogi Board Game Sets & Pieces

A true piece of craftsmanship, Dave’s pool table installation. From delivery to installation, he is extremely meticulous. To complete the installation, it took him nearly 4 hours. Working with DK Billiards was a fantastic experience. They relocated our pool table and installed new pockets and felt on top of the existing surface. From beginning to end, the service was excellent. Dave and Anthony are extremely professional and knowledgeable, and they provide excellent service to their customers.

We were extremely pleased with Dave’s work in restoring our pool table.

Very well, in fact; I really like the people on the team!

I would recommend this company.

  • These individuals were punctual and communicated effectively.
  • It is highly recommended that you visit their store to learn more.
  • DK Billiards recently replaced the felt and repaired the cushion rubber on our well-used pool table, which we had purchased from them several years ago.
  • My pool table has been restored by Dave and his team.
  • The score was 3-0 in my favor, haha.
  • Vielen Dank for your assistance.
  • I had a quick conversation with David.

I purchased a new Penelope Silver Mist table with a convertible dining top and a storage bench for my dining room.

When it comes to customer service, David is a throwback to the good old days: honest, dependable, and willing to go the extra mile.

Using DK Billiards for years has been a pleasure; they are consistently the best and go the extra mile, and they do it all with an infectious smile.

Many times, people call or write to express their dissatisfaction with a problem, but they never take the time to express their gratitude to those who provide exceptional client service.

There.

A damaged table was repaired with the help of this individual.

2001 marked the year that DK Billiard Service installed my first pool table.

In order to accommodate me, Dave went out of his way.

The pool table is fantastic, and we are very happy with it!

DK Billiards is the place to be.

My pool table was dismantled by these gentlemen as part of a home renovation project I contracted them to do.

With the table, they were extremely cautious.

How long does it take for a response?

Exceptional service; they were on time, and did an excellent job!

When we moved from Texas to California, it was the first time.

In search of a used pool table, I stopped by their showroom, apprehensive that I’d be pressured into buying.

The website stated that it would be open, but it was closed when I arrived, after driving 20 minutes.

Earlier today, he moved my pool table from the seller’s home to mine and set it up perfectly!

Plus, they’re all really nice guys to be around!

This morning, we had Dave re-felt and replace the bumpers on our table, and he did an outstanding job!

The.

Our interaction with Dave and Rory was straightforward in every respect.

Exceptional customer service at this billiards supply store.

This is the first place you should go if you need a table repaired.

As a result, I had no idea what questions to ask or what to look for when we were shopping for our very first pool table.

I’ve lost my naturally sweet disposition because of the game of billiards.

Fabu family-owned business, professional service from start to finish, and reasonable pricing (my table is the one with purple felt on their website-how that’s fabu this company is)!

Nothing more to say than that.

Even though I couldn’t recall the manufacturer’s name, when I told him that my rails were rock-solid in their construction, he knew exactly who it was.

To fix the rubber and put on new cloth, I requested that he come out (and while looking at the table, I asked for new pockets as well).

When I shot on this table, it felt like I was shooting on a new table.

Exceptional small family-run business.

A 9-foot table is available for you to try out your cue before purchasing it.

In 2010, David relocated a table from my parents’ home to ours, which I appreciated.

The bumpers were also replaced, and I had it recovered.

Extra cues, new triangle accessories, and a high-end cue for my wife were among the items I picked up this week.

It has been 7 years since the quality restoration that was completed in 2010 made all the difference, in addition to our family’s incredible care of it for over four decades.

It goes without saying that the review score is an unmistakable endorsement.

Obtaining free and useful advice is simple and straightforward.

We would highly recommend David.

It is my pleasure to recommend this mom and pop business that is family-oriented!

My shopping experience there was one of the most enjoyable that I’d had in a long time.

My needs were met in one location, and I felt very satisfied with the items I left with.

Rory and DK Billiards have earned our gratitude once more.

I called him right away and he said he couldn’t come out until next week.

However, David was able to come out the same day to remove our pool table, which we greatly appreciated!

He was on time, well-informed, and extremely productive.

It was their recommendation that we hired them to refelt our pool tables.

For no additional charge, they even fixed our pockets while they were working on them.

With a reasonable price, David was a tremendous help.

His understanding of pool tables is demonstrated by his and his crew’s ability to dismantle and move the table in a timely and safe manner.

His quote for replacing those items was also competitively priced.

(He also noticed that my felt and chalk colors were mismatched and generously provided me with a free set to match!) To allow us to re-carpet the floor, we requested that our table be moved.

He and his crew arrived exactly when they said they would, were pleasant and courteous, and returned two days later to re-felt and re-install the table.

When our table was previously not perfectly leveled, David took great care to make it perfectly level!

The DK Billiards team has been with my family through several moves over the last decade, and each one has been a wonderful experience from beginning to end every time.

Also at a reasonable cost.

Being that my pool table was 40 years old and hadn’t been refinished before, David, you did a fantastic job.

If I know of anyone who has a pool table, I will recommend you to them.

The entire experience with DK Billiards was excellent, beginning with a visit to the showroom and continuing through the installation.

In after doing extensive research, I went in to see the Tahoe Rustic and bought it on the spot.

I couldn’t be more pleased with how things turned out!

During the process, there was outstanding follow-up and attention All future billiard requirements will be met by DK.

It’s difficult to express how impressed I am with this wonderful couple and their company.

The TriBilliards establishment (do not go there!) was a nightmare for me.

His wife expressed genuine concern for my plight and pledged to do all in her power to assist me in getting it resolved.

That he is honest and takes great care in his job was something I much enjoyed.

On the next day, I withdrew the rails, prepared them, and delivered them to him.

DK Billiards and their assistance have been quite helpful.

My second review will be a negative one for TriBilliards.DKBILLIARDS has excellent quality, customer service, follow-up, and, did I say, service?

Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of conducting business with DK Billiards.

The level of satisfaction I’ve had is unmatched.

This is where I get all of my pool materials.

It is possible to check out a variety of pool sticks because they have a large stock on hand.

Inside, there is a welcoming family environment and a pool table that is both beautiful and functional.

David, thank you for your help and support.

Thanks to your assistance, our old pool table become a priceless asset.

Our favorite aspect of Dave’s work is that he does all of the work personally, rather than having a subcontractor do the task.

We were wanting to ‘improve’ our pool table so that it would seem respectable in our family room, and DK Billiards came through big time for my family!

Not a single eyebrow was raised by the proprietor, David Kay.

Our pool table had to be relocated, and DK Billiards was there to assist us in making the transition to “a better location.” My favorite part of the experience was how their team took care of all of the details and made it seem simple.

If you are looking for a pool table, I strongly recommend this “owner-operated” business as the place to go. a link to the page load

What is Shogi?

Shogi, also known as Japanese chess or the Game of Generals, is a board game that has become increasingly popular in Japan. However, its popularity in the United States is a relatively new phenomena. Because of its frequent appearances in manga and anime series, the game, which was initially brought to the country in the wake of World War II by troops who had previously served in Japan, continues to draw new admirers. This isn’t the only reason why more and more people are line up to play this classic board game; there are several more as well.

In that vein, here is our selection of the top best Shogi board game sets and pieces to let you enjoy this timeless classic for yourself.

1. Kumonshuppan Shogi Japanese Chess Pieces

Please make no mistake about it: this Shogi set did not happen to become one of our most popular sellers on the internet by chance. By offering a winning mix of high-quality manufacture and eye-catching design, Kumonshuppan has created an excellent product that, while it may be geared at newbies, is also well suited for more experienced gamers who want to upgrade their gaming experience. In order to ensure sturdiness and endurance, both the Shogi board and the playing pieces are constructed from a satisfyingly thick real-wood veneer, which is practically unsurpassed by any other set we examined.

The sole drawback for first-time users is that the instructions are only available in Japanese language.

On the plus side, Kumonshuppan has taken into consideration mobility by supplying a sturdy hardwood box to put your Shogi pieces in when traveling.

All in all, this is the most comprehensive Shogi game board and pieces we’ve seen, and it’s a fantastic value for the money as well.

2. Nintendo Shogi Japanese Chess Folding Board

The same guys that brought you Super Mario, the Wii, and The Legend of Zelda are also the ones who have brought you one of the greatest Shogi game boards available. Certainly, Nintendo is more renowned for their electronic games, but with this wooden folding Shogi board, the Japanese business demonstrates that they are equally as adept at traditional games. This standard-sized board, which measures 14mm thick, is tiny and light enough to be transported and stowed conveniently while being as well-built as any other high-quality board on the market, assuring that you’ll get years of usage out of it.

However, while this is a sensible and cost-effective solution, it detracts from the authenticity of the Shogi experience.

Such an issue does not exist with the Nintendo controller. Definitely the real deal, with a realistic appearance and feel that makes it a wonderful pick for any serious Shogi aficionado looking for the best of the best.

3. Shogi Japanese Chess Game Set with Wooden Board and Koma Pieces

The same company that brought you Super Mario, the Wii, and The Legend of Zelda also bring you one of the greatest Shogi game boards available on the market today. It’s undeniable that Nintendo is better renowned for their electronic games, but with this wooden folding Shogi board, the Japanese business demonstrates that they are equally adept at traditional games. This standard-sized board, which measures 14mm thick, is tiny and light enough to be transported and stowed simply while being as well-built as any other high-quality board on the market, assuring you’ll get years of usage out of it.

However, while this is a sensible and cost-effective solution, it detracts from the authenticity of the Shogi training experience.

Definitely the genuine deal, with a realistic appearance and feel that makes it a great pick for any serious Shogi aficionado looking for a high-quality sword.

4. Shogi Folding Board

Despite the fact that the name suggests otherwise, the Shogi Folding Board from Worldwise Imports also contains a complete set of pieces, making it one of the best Shogi sets available for people who are new to the game. It is carved rather than painted, and this gives the pieces an air of handcrafted quality that makes them seem right at home next to a high-end chess set or backgammon board. Meanwhile, the board itself is everything you’d expect it to be: strong, sturdy, and made to last, while still maintaining a clean, appealing surface that further adds to the overall visual appeal of the set.

However, the game does contain a set of English-language instructions, so it’s definitely worth keeping this one on your radar if you’re getting ready to try your hand at Shogi for the first time.

5. NUOBESTY Magnetic Japanese Shogi Game

The NUOBESTY Magnetic Japanese Shogi Game, which is the most affordable option on our list, measures just 9.84′′ x 9.84′′ x 0.79′′, making it the ideal choice if you’re looking for a travel-friendly version to help you pass the time on those long flights. Despite the fact that the game is small and budget-friendly, the designers haven’t skimped on the essentials. Because of the wood-style finish on the magnetic Shogi board, the whole thing is both visually appealing and functional, and the plastic pieces are both constructed and painted to a high level of quality.

6. Japanese Chess Classical Honkaku Shogi Game Set by Hanayama

Trying up a new game, whether it’s Shogi, Chinese checkers, or anything else, almost always entails shelling out a significant sum of money to get a high-quality set on which to learn the game. That’s fine if you fall in love with the game as much as we have with Shogi, but if it turns out to be a dud for you, you’ve likely spent more money than you would have wanted on something that will likely sit in your closet for the foreseeable future. A fantastic answer to this difficulty is provided by theJapanese Chess Classical Honkaku Shogi Game Set by Hanayama.

All of these factors will combine to provide a high-quality gaming experience that will be free of the difficulties that might emerge while playing on a small-scale Shogi set.

So you and your loved ones may test out the game with low risk and only consider upgrading to a high-end set if you discover that you truly appreciate it after a short period of time of playing.

7. Nintendo Wooden Shogi Piece Set

Are you missing a few Shogi pieces, or are you simply seeking for the right set to match with the magnificent Nintendo Shogi Board that we looked at earlier in this article? Take a look at theNintendo Wooden Shogi Piece Set, a complete set of exquisitely crafted wooden pieces that has enough pieces for both players to play a typical one-on-one game of shogi. There’s something about them that we really like: they have a handmade feel to them, with each piece being cut to a little different shape and size depending on its rank.

If you’re new to the game, you’ll need to purchase a board as well, but if you’re merely looking for a high-quality replacement or upgrade to your existing pieces, this is a choice you shouldn’t overlook.

8. Yellow Mountain Imports Wooden Shogi Set

When it comes to some of our favorite traditional games, Yellow Mountain Imports never fails to provide the goods. From marbles to Mahjong tables, they have it all. As a result, it should come as no surprise that the firm continues to outperform the competition when it comes to the classic game of Japanese Chess. Each of these gorgeous Shogi pieces, like the Nintendo set shown above, has been skillfully constructed to mimic the true experience of playing the game the way it has been played for centuries, with the characters painted plainly in black and red to match the Nintendo set seen above.

Even while the paper board is a great touch, it is only ever intended to be used as a convenient addition to the overall package.

9. Yellow Mountain Imports Shogi Japanese Chess Game Set

Yellow Mountain Imports is a company we admire, and if you want a whole Shogi set rather than simply the pieces, this completeShogi Japanese Chess Game Set is the best alternative for you. In terms of style, the pieces are virtually identical to those found in our 8th-placed option, with the exception that they now come with a beautifully crafted hardwood Shogi board that is both stylish and durable. This, along with our 10th-placed pick, is one of the few Shogi boards that has built-in drawers for storing your tiles, making it a rare find.

10. Hanayama Classical Honkaku Shogi Set

At first appearance, the Hanayama Classical Honkaku Shogi set appears to be no different than any other similar set. It’s true that the board and the pieces are both solidly constructed and admirably crafted in terms of design and craftsmanship, but then again, so are the components included in just about every other set on our list. Consider that the Shogi board is really designed with two built-in draws that are ideal for keeping your tiles if you look a little closer. This, combined with the lightweight design, makes it an excellent choice if you’re looking for a portable set that you can take with you everywhere you go.

It’s a perfect choice for playing with older relatives or even teaching your young children to this ancient Japanese game for the first time because each piece is plainly printed with larger-than-average characters.

Shogi Set Buyers’ Guide 2022

Assuming you’ve made it this far, you’re probably on the same page as us in that not all Shogi sets are created equal. Everyone has something unique to give, whether it’s in terms of manufacturing quality or just the practical restrictions imposed by the board’s size. Here are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing a Shogi board, a set of Shogi pieces, or a full set of board and pieces:

Material

Assuming you’ve made it this far, you’re probably on the same page as us in that not all Shogi sets are made equal. Whether it’s the manufacturing quality or the practical restrictions imposed by the board’s size, each one has something unique to offer in terms of functionality. With that in mind, here are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing a Shogi board, a set of Shogi pieces, or a whole board and pieces set:

Portability

If you intend to take your game with you to your friends’ houses or on vacation, it must be easily transportable. Material matters here as well, as hardwood sets are often heavier and hence more difficult to transport than other types of furniture. However, that is not the only factor to take into consideration. Aspects such as size are taken into consideration. Some boards are larger than others, which makes them perfect for playing at home but not so great for transporting from one location to another or fitting into a travel bag.

The fact that it is tiny may prevent it from being the center focus of your game room, but it is an excellent choice for gaming on the move.

Price Tag

Last but not least, it’s important to analyze how the price of a product impacts your choice to purchase it. As is true of most things in life, the highest-quality items will always be the most expensive, but that does not imply that it is always a good idea to spend as much money as you possibly can on them. For example, if you’re a novice and aren’t sure how much you’re going to enjoy the game, does it really make sense to spend all of your money on the most costly, deluxe-brand set available to you?

Instead, you might find it more helpful to get a lower-priced set in order to get a feel for the game.

What if it turns out to be something you don’t care for?

Which is the Best Shogi Board and Pieces Set to Buy?

After taking all of these considerations into account, the decision on which Shogi set to purchase ultimately comes down to a blend of practicality and personal preference. Are you just getting started and looking for a beginner-friendly set to use to learn how to play Shogi? With addition, the full-size board included in the Hanayama Classical Honkaku Shogi Game Set from Hanayama makes it an ideal fit for this game. Are you want to update your game and merely require a higher-quality set of playing pieces?

Experiential players searching for the greatest full Shogi set money can buy can look no further. No other Shogi set compares to theKumonshuppan Shogi Japanese Chess Pieces, which offers an unbeatable mix of great quality and stunning design, making it the most complete Shogi set available.

Amazon.com: Yellow Mountain Imports Shogi Japanese Chess Game Set – Wooden Board with Drawers and Traditional Koma Playing Pieces : Toys & Games

5.0 stars out of 5 for this product Because of the small size of the board, not all of the pieces will fit. On February 8, 2021, a review will be conducted in the United States. First and foremost, the design and construction of this board are excellent. However, it is important to note that it is on the smaller side before purchasing it, especially if you are new to shogi.

In fact, larger pieces are unable to fit within their respective squares. I included a normal board as a point of comparison to demonstrate that larger boards provide a more enjoyable play experience.

Top reviews from the United States

On July 16, 2016, a review was conducted in the United States. Purchase that has been verified It came complete with all of the components necessary to play the game, which is always a plus. This set had 20 pawns (2 extra, I believe), 2 rooks, 2 bishops, 4 lances, 4 knights, 4 silvers, 4 golds, a king, and an opposing king, in addition to the pieces listed above. The board is really cool, and it feels fantastic in your hands! The directions are simple and to the point. The pieces in this set are of poor quality, which is my main complaint about it.

  1. Not bad if you’re looking to learn shogi, however they might do better to increase the quality of the pieces so that they’re more evenly distributed over the table.
  2. After several uses of the board, I noticed that the drawer has a set of magnets on it to assist the drawer in self-closing shut into the board itself.
  3. They went to considerable lengths to ensure that the board was of the highest possible quality.
  4. Purchase that has been verified The board came today, and I’ve been putting it through its paces to see how well it holds up.
  5. On the back row, it appears that the King is crowding out the Gold Generals, which is causing the Silver Generals to be pushed off the field.
  6. I’m still perplexed as to why the underside of the board is covered with a little piece of felt material.
  7. If anything, this is a minor quibble that shouldn’t deter anyone from purchasing this board in the future.

Verified Purchase on January 8, 2022 in the United States of America A beautiful weeb in my life received this board, and they expressed delight with the fact that they felt like they were inside an anime.

Do you require a board that will emit that pleasant “clack” when you have successfully promoted your piece to gold?

Verified Purchase on January 4, 2020 in the United States of America This was purchased as a present for a young person who want to learn how to play shogi.

On October 19, 2012, a reviewer in the United States confirmed that they had made a purchase.

As previously stated by another reviewer, some of the pieces are somewhat larger than the squares, but stepping slightly beyond the lines isn’t a major issue in this game.

One or two of the black-ink sides were a little smeared, but the rest were fine.

It’s not exactly a collector’s set to be displayed with pride, but that’s not why I bought it in the first place.

It slips in and out with ease (from either side), and while sliding in, it reaches its proper position with smoothness.

It just “discovers” it.

Dots are used for single-square moves, short lines are used for distance moves (lance, rook, bishop), and L-shaped hooks are used at the head of the board to represent the knights’ movements.

On March 1, 2011, a review was conducted in the United States.

Natural wood, rather than plywood, was used to construct this whole set.

Despite its light weight, the board is quite durable.

Aside from the game pieces itself, the set is constructed entirely of natural wood.

It seems as though the writing on the pieces was done by hand because the ink on some of the pieces has faded as a result of someone whipping the ink away to recreate a few characters.

Due to the fact that they are manufactured from waste pieces of wood, one of the pawns was deformed in appearance.

The instructional leaflet, on the other hand, offers little more than explain the fundamental rules of Shogi.

It has simply the minimal elements required to play and learn how to play Shogi, with no more items.

The piece comes with two spare pawns, allowing the deformed piece to be abandoned without consequence.

This set has one disappointing aspect: the person who wrote on the pieces or assembled it did not sign his or her name on the bottom-side of the Jewel (opposing) King, nor did he or she write the font he or she used to write on the pieces on the bottom-side of the (defending) King, which is a small but significant oversight.

Purchase that has been verified The fact that I didn’t pay more attention when I checked it before wrapping it as a present made me feel a bit bad about myself.

My attention was drawn to the scratch on the board when my son opened it and placed it in front of a light on a table. Although it is not readily apparent, it is a disappointment.

Choosing a Shogi Board – Tips and Recommended Products From Japan

Are you looking to purchase a high-quality Japanese shogi board but aren’t sure where to start or what to look for? During this post, we will discuss some of the most significant factors to consider when selecting a shogi board, as well as propose several high-quality shogi boards that are created in Japan by well-known firms and artisans.

What Determines the Price of a Shogi Board?

Kaya is the most highly valued wood for the production of shogi boards. Shogi boards are priced according to their composition, and the sort of wood used to construct them is an essential component in this determination (or plastic, in the case of a cheap set). There are many different types of wood that are utilized, but some are regarded to be more valuable than others. It is generally thought that the greatest wood is “kaya,” also known as the Japanese nutmeg tree, since it generates a pleasant snapping sound when a piece of furniture is placed on it and has a gorgeous wood texture and color that is claimed to only become better over time.

2. The Wood Grain

Another aspect that influences the value of wooden shogi boards is the “kidori,” or the cut of wood that was used to make the board in question. The wood grain pattern that emerges on the board changes depending on the size of the tree from which the wood was harvested and the piece of the trunk that was utilized (closer to the center of the trunk vs. closer to the outside border of the trunk). Cuts with more uniform and evenly-grained grain patterns are more highly regarded, whereas cuts with cross grains and irregular grain patterns are less valuable.

3. The Thickness

Shogi boards are available in a variety of thicknesses, with thicker boards commanding a greater price than thinner boards, as would be expected. Some of the most significant professional games are played on the most densely packed professional shogi boards, which are typically 24 cm thick.

4. Solid or Component board

A “hagiban” is a shogi board that is made up of two or more pieces of wood that are joined together. Because the latter can be made from smaller pieces of wood and are therefore less scarce, they sell for a lower price than the more expensive “ichimai ita” boards, making them an attractive option for those who want a high-end board made from high-quality wood but who cannot afford an ic. A “hagiban” is a shogi board that is made

5. Defects

“Hagiban” boards are usually made from two or more pieces of wood that are joined together, rather than from a single piece of wood, known as “ichimai ita.” Because the latter can be made from smaller pieces of wood and are therefore less scarce, they sell for a lower price than the more expensive “ichimai ita” boards, making them an attractive option for those who want a high-end board made from top-quality wood but who cannot afford a “ichimai ita.”

How Much Should I Spend on a Shogi Board?

Boards made of inexpensive plastic or plywood may be purchased for as little as a couple thousand yen, and masterpieces carved from single blocks of precious, rare wood can cost several hundred thousand yen or more. It is entirely up to you how much money you want to spend, but for a high-quality board manufactured by a Japanese artisan who specializes primarily in the production of shogi and go boards, expect to pay at least 10,000 yen for a composite board that is 3 cm thick. In order to get something a little thicker, or a board that is manufactured from a single piece of wood, you should expect to pay more than 40,000 yen for a high-quality piece.

Styles of Shogi Boards

Shogi boards are available in a number of different shapes and sizes. Here’s a quick rundown of the most frequent varieties.

Shogi Boards With Legs (脚付将棋盤)

Traditional Japanese shogi boards are typically shown as thick table-like boards with connected legs, which is likely what most people have in mind when they think of traditional Japanese shogi boards. These boards are normally carved from a single block of wood and are available in a variety of thicknesses ranging from around 12 cm to approximately 21 cm. Tradition dictates that these boards be used in conjunction with a pair of cushioned armrests as well as two separate little “komadai” tables for displaying and placing the captured pieces.

Tabletop Shogi Boards (卓上将棋盤)

The tabletop shogi board is the most often encountered sort of shogi board. These are often placed on top of a standard table and are frequently used in conjunction with small, square tabletop “komadai” for displaying captured pieces. These boards, like the shogi boards, are available in a variety of thicknesses, ranging from a few millimeters thick to nearly as thick as a tiny legged shogi board.

Bargain Shogi Boards

There are several low-cost shogi boards available for purchase on the internet for people who are only interested in getting a board to play on and aren’t bothered with the quality or lifespan of the set. These discount boards, on the other hand, are often composed of low-quality wood and are frequently manufactured outside of Japan. Despite the fact that these boards are available for a very low price, the adage “you get what you pay for” is absolutely true in this situation, since these things are of very poor quality.

Portable Shogi Boards

A portable shogi board is another form of board that many shogi players may carry on hand as a backup or as a second board. This type of board is often smaller in size than a conventional board, and it frequently has a hinge or may be disassembled to make it more compact. Others, such as the portable board described below, are constructed of cloth, which allows them to be folded or coiled up for storage while being extremely lightweight.

What About the Shogi Pieces?

If you are purchasing a shogi board for the first time, you will almost certainly need to acquire a set of shogi pieces as well. Although shogi pieces are often marketed in a set with a shogi board, the majority of high-end shogi pieces are available for purchase individually.

According to many players, the shogi pieces represent their most personal feature of their shogi set, and they thus take the greatest care when selecting and configuring their set of pieces.

Features to Keep In Mind When Choosing a Set of Shogi Pieces

Shogi pieces, like shogi boards, are fashioned from a variety of woods, just as they are with shogi boards (or plastic, for bargain sets). Hogi pieces made from “kaya” (Japanese nutmeg tree), “tsuge” (Japanese box tree), birch, maple, or other hardwoods are considered to be the highest-quality sets available.

Font

Each shogi piece contains a “kanji” character or characters printed on both sides of the piece. Nonetheless, the font or calligraphic style employed can differ significantly from set to set, with some displaying a single character on each piece (which is technically an abbreviation of the full name of the piece) and others displaying an intricate calligraphic design that is difficult to read at first glance. Choose a typeface that appeals to your sense of style.

Engraving Method

In addition to the typeface used, the technique in which the characters are inscribed on the pieces might differ as well. The most common styles are “kaki-goma,” in which the characters are simply written or printed on the surface of the piece; “kezuri-goma,” in which the characters are carved into the face of the pieces and painted with lacquer; “kezuriume-goma,” in which the characters are carved into the face of the pieces and filled with lacquer until smooth with the surface of the pieces; and “moriage-goma,” in which the characters are carved

Maker

Another distinguishing element of high-end shogi sets is the inclusion of the name of the craftsman who created them, which is inscribed on the rear edge of the gyoku and ou (king) pieces, respectively. Each creator has a distinct style, and the presence of this trademark is indicative of a high-quality set.

Where Can I Buy a Shogi Board?

Unless you have the opportunity to visit a shogi board workshop in person to pick your board, purchasing a shogi board online is the most convenient option. Some workshops have their own websites and can sell their products directly to customers, while others rely on partner sites such as BECOS to sell their items to customers throughout the world. For those seeking for a low-cost shogi board to get their feet wet in the game and aren’t concerned with the workmanship and creative touch that goes into the production of a shogi board, online retailers such as Amazon should offer what you’re looking for.

Best Tabletop Shogi Board (Single Piece)

An illustration is shown. Each shogi board is made from a single piece of spruce (known as “shin kaya” in Japanese when referring to shogi boards) that is 9 cm thick and carved in the traditional manner. It is nevertheless a wonderful piece of Japanese workmanship, despite the fact that the wood was imported from North America and is not as precious as the original kaya wood. If you are searching for a tabletop board constructed from a single block of wood (“ichimai ita”), this is an excellent choice since the wood grain is even and the light hue of the wood is quite beautiful.

Best Portable Shogi Board

Source:BECOS A renowned shogi player named Akiko Nakakura designed and developed these unusual fabric “furoshiki” shogi board sets, which are unquestionably the nicest portable shogi boards available. It was her vision for the sets to equip youngsters with an affordable yet high-quality shogi set that would allow them to learn and develop a passion for the game. Traditional dyeing techniques are used to create the “furoshiki” cloths, which are hand-dyed in Kyoto and contain a perfectly-sized shogi board that may be knotted into a bag to store the box of shogi pieces that are provided.

An additional feature is the inclusion of a hand-painted folding fan (which is frequently used by professionals during their games) as well as a beginner’s guide to the game of shogi.

Best Bargain Shogi Board

Source:Amazon.com If you’re looking for something inexpensive that will suffice for playing the game, this Shogi board, which is available on Amazon, is a great option. It’s also quite reasonable and comes with a set of pieces. Shogi – Japanese Chess

Shogi is the Japanese form of the game of chess, and it is considered to be the most challenging of all the conventional Chess versions by some. The essential distinction between the two games is that when pieces are captured, they can be re-entered onto the board and used to play for the opposite team. The result is that draws are extremely unusual in Japanese Chess compared to other types of chess, giving it an enormous edge over the others.

r/shogi – Where can I buy an authentic Shogi set in the U.S.?

Kaya wood is used to construct this board and piece set with pull out trays. Take a look at this: Yellow Mountain Imports. I believe the board is made of a wood/plastic mix. Never before have I seen a traditional-style set like this promoted in such a way as this one. Other sets will include drawers, but the board will almost certainly be made of plastic. You can also buy classic sets in which the box and lid (for the pieces) may be used as komadai. You may purchase either one or both from the Aobo Shop, but the extremely hefty shipping expenses from France will put a damper on your plans.

  1. If you are choosy about your board (as I am!
  2. One of the Shogi boards is made of bamboo, not kaya, and it happens to be my favorite.
  3. Look for the Shogi Set “Meijin Premium” on the market.
  4. It’s possible that shipping charges will catch up with you.
  5. (I have had no troubles with this source in the past.) The fact that there aren’t any other providers of both in North America is beyond comprehension to me.

If you buy anything from another country, the so-called “tariff-free trade” regulations apply only if you are a huge corporation that contributes to the funding of whatever gang of bandits is presently in charge.
